Crack Garden

A brilliant way to transform a yard or public space that has previously been covered with concrete. Use heavy equipment to create cracks in the concrete, and then seed the areas with plants tolerant of such an environment.
The planting within the cracks is somewhat random, changing regularly depending on the whims and desires of the resident gardeners, but usually includes a wide range of vegetables, herbs, flowers and weeds.
An award-winning concept from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Via Neatorama.

  1. Is this where I go for the five o'clock free crack giveaway? It's hard for me to see a garden called the crack garden and not think about the Dave Chappelle Tyrone Biggs crack addict character. Were the project designers making a joke when they named it, and was the ASLA in on the joke? It seems kind of insensitive to name an urban space "Crack Garden."
It also reminds me of a Jack Gilbert line, "It takes so long to get the ruins right."Faux wabi sabi.
