Schlieren photography of a snapped wet towel


A video from the Gas Dynamics Laboratory at my father's alma mater (Penn State) uses schlieren photography to document that a snapped wet towel in the shower room goes supersonic, generating a shock wave.

    I always thought the snapping sound of the towel - wet or dry - WAS the breaking of the sound barrier...
