"Leg falsies"

From Mechanix Illustrated, August 1953, via Centuries of Advice and Advertisements.

  1. Tangentially, it occurs to me that if you asked anybody younger than about 60 what the question "Are my seams straight?" referred to, they'd have no idea. And yet every woman over 60 would recognize it instantly; they'd almost certainly have asked it themselves many times back in the day.

  2. The comment about the seams reminds me of something my grandmother told me. She said that during the war, stockings were hard to come by, so she and her sister would use a pencil to draw seams up their legs in order to make it seem as though they were wearing the real deal.
