I am recurrently amazed at how many people, in casual conversation, justify our involvement in Iraq by citing Iraq's role in the events of 9/11. Today the newswires are carrying a story about Dick Cheney admitting that there is no proof connecting Iraq to that attack:
“On the question of whether or not Iraq was involved in 9-11, there was never any evidence to prove that,” he told the Fox host. “There was “some reporting early on … but that was never borne out… [Former CIA Director] George [Tenet] … did say and did testify that there was an ongoing relationship between al-Qaeda and Iraq, but no proof that Iraq was involved in 9-11.”But the video above was from way back in the summer of 2006, and in it President Bush in a press conference states - emphatically - that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.
And yet the public still holds this misperception.
And let's not forget that Bush also said, "I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It is not important, and it is not our priority."
ReplyDeleteNot to mention the close personal and business ties between the families Bush and bin Laden...
It's a sign of what's wrong with society. People get their news in soundbytes, and when they hear Iraq and 911 in the same sentence enough times, they become linked in their minds.
