Sharks by the thousands off the coast of Florida
Viewed from a helicopter, as reported by WPTV in West Palm Beach.
Update: "...they are believed to be spinner sharks between 3-7 feet, and they were most likely swimming parallel to the beaches between Fort Lauderdale and Jupiter Island in search of baitfish and warmer water..."
People will see this and mistakenly think there's some kind of shark overpopulation when the truth is that many thousands, millions of them have been slowly killed to make shark fin soup- not to mention killed by yahoos across the world for sport and "vengeance."
having surfed near there with large schools of mullets underneath me this does not surprise me much, though it is disconcerting when one leaves the water turns around and sees a few fins in the distance. even more fun when body surfing.
A family friend was a firefigher on a barrier island, and he told us he once saw something like this. He said that no one would ever get in the water again if they saw the shot taken from above, showing swimmers near shore, and just on the other side of the sandbar dozens and sometime hundreds of sharks.
Wow! That is SO awesome - I'd love to see this in person. From the air, of course - or a boat!
