I don't think anyone is under the illusion that the fence can key people out. What it does do is keep vehicles out and provide time for boarder patrols, helicopters, and electronic spotting devices to spot people crossing.
Anyone who has studied history can tell you that any time you have a rich country contiguous to a poor country, nothing canstop migration to the former from the latter.
I guess this makes certain that those who do get across are physically fit enough to pick crops?!? That wouldn't stop my 3 year old. Just another example of how out of touch DC is with the real world. With tunnels and coyotes smuggling people across the border in semi trucks, this seems more of a "WPA project" than a serious curb to illegal border crossings. We need looser restrictions and more protections for those who want to and are able to work, and stricter penalties for those who then still cross illegally.

ReplyDeleteClearly we need land mines, or an electrified fence would be more effective, installing that would create jobs wouldn't it?
ReplyDeleteOf course we'd have to make sure the contractor involved didn't hire any undocumented workers and that would likely drive the price up.
for the sarcasm impaired: ;-)
