Moonwalk map
The image above looks bizarre until you realize what it is - a map of the exploration by the astronauts who first walked on the moon (Apollo 11 crew, 1969).
The image is complex, with a detailed legend, and is best explored in depth by clicking to enlrage to fullscreen resolution. The pale yellow areas are those walked on by the astronauts.
The take-home point is that the map is superimposed on a diagram of a standard baseball field. This puts in stark perspective the extent of "exploration" that occurred on the initial visit. Impressive for its time, no doubt, but several orders of magnitude away from what we are able to do now with robotic probes. Of course, that was 40 years ago...
