Hunting has been banned in parts of Austria after freak storms with tennis ball-sized hailstones killed up to 90 per cent of the wild game population. Not sure how they could calculate such numbers without knowing the baseline, but it's still a tragedy.
Hundreds of deer were discovered either dead or so badly injured they had to be put down by wildlife experts.
In the country's rural Salzburg province, 90 per cent of pheasants and 80 per cent of hares were killed in the hail storms.

It is possible to estimate a population of wild animals. Various statistic models can help you do that, quite acurately as a matter of fact. So, if at one point you know exactly how many animals are dead, you ca pretty much give such percentage.
ReplyDeleteStill, I agree with you, it is very sad to hear about that.
