This object was offered for sale on eBay in 2008.
The rare 19th century item is made of copper and was designed to be worn by boys so they could not commit the 'sin'. Attached to a belt it would have encased the genitalia. The bizarre antique dates back to around 1880 and was used in Catholic France. It is being offered for sale on auction website eBay with a starting price of £750.Via ein hod and Fuck Yeah Victorians.
Seller David Burns, of Curious Science, says that during a quarter of a century dealing in medical curiosities he has never had one for sale... "This is the first example we have offered for sale in 24 years. The condition is excellent. Three and half inches top to base."
Part of the neglected, or rather ignored history of the oppression of human males.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness they left air holes for the little guy.
ReplyDeleteAt least this isn't permanent. The adoption (in the USA) of circumcision to treat and subsequently to prevent/decrease masturbation in males (and also females—at least we stopped doing that in the US by the mid 1900's) is far more permanent. We still haven't stopped that!
ReplyDeleteYears ago I saw a patent document for one of this things. It had spikes inside the "shaft" so that if evil thoughts started to have their effect the wearer would change his mind in a hurry. Is that how this one worked? Or did the inventor figure a simple "hands off" would be enough?
ReplyDeleteCertainly for chastity as the reak of urine would put off dating. I'm not very confident that this would deter masturbation - unless this is for young boys and there was an embarrassing bell hung from the loop.
ReplyDeleteThe size is unsettling - 3 1/2" from top to base? Subtracting the fitment at the top removes at least 1/2" from its overall height and it is maybe 3" front to back... eeesh.
christianity in a nut-shell, pun INTENDED!

DeleteHEY DAVIDCJONES Circumcision isnnt just a mastrubation deterrent it started to prevent diseases back many centuries ago when we couldn't prevent bacterial and fungal growth bacteria and fungi used to grow in the skin between the foreskin and the head of the penis often resulting in men being unable to reproduce it was also used in ancient times by early christians following the covenant of god in old testament times some people still follow the old covenant and there is no medical reason to keep the foreskin so often times parents still have there kids circucizied
ReplyDeleteI believe such a device was for bedtime only, with the wearer's hands tied to the bedposts.
