Alexander Selkirk's island
Three photos from a brief photoessay in Der Spiegel about the island where Alexander Selkirk was marooned, forming the basis for Defoe's later novel Robinson Crusoe.
The location (zoomable satellite image here) is in the Juan Fernandez archipelago off the coast of Chile. From the photos, it doesn't look like a bad place to spend four years (assuming you could get internet access via satellite).
Some archaeological studies have been done of Selkirk's campsite; details here.

Nice island, seems serene and is a great panorama...
ReplyDeleteExcellent post, just what I was looking for. I am researching Selkirk for posts on my blog re 18th century survival.
ReplyDeleteMuch appreciated.
