i have seen super big UPC bar codes like that on some store brand products - aldi and maybe save-a-lot come to mind? it does make it easier at checkout.
clancy's chips (an aldi brand) has a UPC code that wraps across 60% of the packaging. the band is on the back, full across both top and bottom, extending onto the front.
Aldi requires that their brand suppliers provide UPC codes that improve checkout speeds. This often results in barcodes that go all of the way across multiple sides of the packaging.
