It always startles me to see photos of public places, city streets, etc with so few people present.  Things were different then.

    Maybe the pictures were simply taken early in the day?
    Try get up early and have a look round your hometown.

    Or at an "off" time of year?

    I was in Rome in November, and that looks about right to me!
