Three quick questions, Audrey. What browser are you using (I presume it hasn't changed in the past couple weeks), what computer are you using, and do you know how much RAM you have on your computer?
One other thing - when you say "crash" - what is it that happens? Does the site not load, but you can view other sites, or does the browser become unresponsive so you have to restart, or does the entire computer become unresponsive?
Stan, I view your blog at work. The problem that I have started after your post last week that you had made adjustments to remedy other's problems with viewing (!). What happens is that my screen freezes at a blue background without the image of the blog fully loading (the waterfall). The loading bar at the bottom stops at about a millimeter full and makes no more progress. I cannot close the page or navigate to another site: I have to control-alt-delete and end my explorer program. Then restart it.
I have internet explorer here, no recent changes to it recently. The computer is a Dell with an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz and .99 ram. I think that is how to describe it. I am not much into hardware and I prefer Macs.
I was not sufficiently expressive before about how much I like your blog. I have never seen one with such fascinating information, beautiful photos and no unpleasant political agendas. I have ready every post right back to the beginning since discovering the blog during the recent competition for web awards. Again, thank you very much for making a lovely contribution to my days.
Thanks, Audrey. A compliment like that deserves an attentive reply.
I'm also a Mac person (since the Mac Plus), so I had to ask my wife re your Dell; she said it sounds like a good, current computer - although you must have misread or mistyped the RAM.
Re the browser, I just checked my Google Analytics. Of the ~70,000 visits here a month, about half were via Firefox, and 30% Internet Explorer, so if it's an IE problem, I should hear from others.
I believe most problems related to page loading etc ultimately boil down to the RAM. Either your computer doesn't have enought RAM, or the RAM is busy. Perhaps you are running other programs in the background and checking the web while that is being done, or perhaps you did other things first and the earlier programs didn't "let go" of their RAM.
If you have a network administrator or a tech help person, you might ask him/her about how to "defragment" your disk; it could be that there is sufficient capacity but it is scattered all over the disk and that makes it inefficient.
I can't think of any way that my decreasing the size of the home page would have exacerbated your problem. I think the timing must be coincidental.
I'm waiting to hear from others, and then will decide what to do.
Thank you. I too do not see how your reducing the size of the page would cause me problems. Coincidence is likely the answer or I am going too fast (the not letting go issue).
I apologise if I am leaving this comment in the wrong location. I couldn't find a general comments area.
ReplyDeleteSomething has changed in your blog and it now crashes my browser half the time I go to it. This started last week.
Also, I truly appreciate your work and come to your site first thing every morning. Thank you!!!

ReplyDeleteEither way, I will still visit your site daily!
