This dog eats flies
A curious video, which is a little troubling in that at the end it tries to market t-shirts. The person making the video points out the flies to the dog, which raises the question as to whether the dog has been trained in this behavior, rather than having it arise spontaneously.
Any dog owners out there who know if dogs enjoy eating flies?

My dog will eat all sorts of insects, if she can catch them. I've never encouraged or discouraged this behavior. She's done it since I adopted her at six months old. I'm not sure if she likes the taste of them, or just likes to catch them (i.e. prey drive).
ReplyDeleteWe once had a cat who caught and chewed up tarantula moths. It sounded awful, but we were grateful for his talent. Those things are scary-looking!
ReplyDeleteMost cats love chasing bugs - we used to try to herd bugs indoors at night (not too difficult, they crowd around the light above the door) and the younger cats would go crazy, chasing them around. And I've known a dog who chased bees, trying to eat them. That could turn out unpleasantly, I would think ....

ReplyDeleteMy dog will annoy any insect that gets in the house. Any fly is eaten as soon as he catches it. Other insects he just plays with. If anything gets in 'his' yard it is immediately chased off or barked at until it leaves.
ReplyDeleteOur dog regularly tries, and occasionally succeeds at eating yellowjackets. Don't know if he's been stung, but I can't imagine that he hasn't, and yet he persists.
ReplyDeleteYeah, my dogs have all attempted to eat flies, though I've never witnessed any success. Spiders are much easier for them to catch. Impressive video.
