Last spring, when my car smelled like it was on fire, I discovered a mouse's nest on the engine block, and was impessed by the industriousness of the little critter. (At the link there's a link to the entertaining and informative site "Mice Ate My Car.")
I'm lucky my garage critter was a mouse, and not a chipmunk. The photo above shows hundreds of black walnuts discovered under the hood of a vehicle in Indiana. More details here, via.
