the joke is partly that garden centers keep perennials for the whole summer and do not really care for them, so they are half dead by this time of the year. gardeners looking for a bargain will buy them, and the plants are so bad off that that they do not survive the winter. or, the bargain hunters are not good gardeners and let the plants die.

No, it's about perennials. Most garden stores discount them to reduce inventory before winter. That's when I like to go shopping.
