Our first hummer has arrived...


... at the feeder earlier this week. Probably passing through heading north, but we typically have some that lay claim to the back yard and the feeders each summer.

The map above comes from the very interesting (and useful) Journey North website, where the public tracks various migrations. The data is displayed in maps that scroll through the spring and fall weeks to show where sightings have occurred.

Here's the Monarch butterfly map; they've reached central Illinois and should be to our house in a couple weeks - precisely when the milkweed plants start to emerge in the garden and fields.

There are other migration maps at the site for whooping cranes, robins, bald eagles, loons, and gray whales.
