I'd hate to think that a creature had to die to provide me with an unnecessary item like a candleholder. It's abhorrent to me...

...and how would you know it's dead? It could just be well-trained.
It would appear to be sculpted in ceramic and glazed. Possibly sculpted otherwise to make a mold and slip-cast, if the artist is intending to make multiple of them.
Classof65, I had the same reaction at first. It is ceramic, but I like your way of thinking. Better to be overly concerned, than not concerned enough.
