I made the same mistake in reverse while watching the england-USA game for the world cup this year (that's why england plays under the red cross flag). I then got lectured by a bunch of english folks at the party who brought up many of my shortcomings.
Whales had it's own 'Acts of Union' with England then the second 'Acts of Union' made the first Union Jack with Scotland then (back when they were Catholic) got a claim on Ireland thus the most resent 'Acts of Union' and the resont flag
um...don't know what the "fictional" comment means...but that is actually the reason the flag looks like that.

Yep, definitely not fictional. And there's been a few efforts to incorporate a Welsh imprimatuer into the Union Jack as well.
