The Divergent Association Task challenges you to select ten words that are "as different from each other as possible, in all meanings and uses of the words."
My score was 92.14, "higher than 98.29% of the people who have completed this task"
Unfortunately "membrane" and "parameter" showed some correlation, as did "codex" and "shard" - but "enticement", "glacier", and "bunion" were pretty independent.
Via Neatorama.
So I did way better on the second try after getting the gist of their system: 93+ score and better than 98.89. But it seems pretty easy to game the system just by choosing ridiculously specific terms as opposed to generalized terms. Choose splinter instead of wood, or as I did: dentin instead of tooth. A fun test though. Thanks

ReplyDeletefirst go I got 94.1, but some of my words were rejected. The highest I managed was 102.1 with bracelets, platypi, mattock, banquet, lipid, debut and encryption. Some words don't work, so with animals echidna and okapi, jaguarundi got rejected, whereas ocelot, wombat and platypus are okay - obscure, but not too obscure. Mattock was okay, but tomahawk was not, so again, it's hard to know what will and what won't work. Sometimes plurals help and sometimes they don't, so lipid scored better than lipids, whereas platypi scored better than platypus. I was trying for quite obscure words, but a lot of them got rejected, which is a bit of a shit, so you've just got to play around. Also try and use words that have a very specific meaning, rather than word that have many meanings or are used in a few different contexts. - I think I spent way too much time on this last night.

ReplyDeleteI got 93.4 on my first attempt, but had some words rejected. The best I've done was 102.1 with bracelets, platypi, mattock, banquet, lipid, debut and encryption. It seems to be a bit tricky to figure which out what gets accepted, as my aim was to aim for obscure nouns that weren't too obscure, but there is some weirdness. So, platypus, ocelot and wombat get accepted, but echidna, jaguarundi and okapi don't get accepted. Similarly mattock is okay, but tomahawk does not (mattock and platypi have quite a few connections for some reason, so i was trying for different tools). Plurals can go either way, so platypi is better than platypus, bracelets was better than bracelet, but lipid was better than lipids. From memory, hippopotami was rejected. You also need to have words that have quite specific meanings, rather than multiple different meanings and not common without being obscure. I think I spent too much time on this last night
ReplyDeleteOmg, I can't believe I beat the TYWKIWDBI guy! Lol. I scored a 92.5 on my first (and only) try. My selected words were terror, ovum, stitching, fig, lights, ambidextrous, and fragrance. "Fragrance" and "fig" had the most correlation, unsurprisingly.
ReplyDeleteWowee, raising the bar for non-natives :). About five minutes of consideration, first try: Your score is 94.71, higher than 99.38% of the people who have completed this task

I'm not really seeing the connection between flagpole and shoelace.
flagpole & shoelace... both compound words?
