I agree that it's a viper -- if I had to guess, I'd say a European Horn-Nosed Viper.

Second gaboon. Tail first happens. The prey goes down more easily head first due to the limbs. If the prey is small enough it doesn't matter. Also if the snake has difficulty it can regurgitate the prey and try again
