Cigarette smoking plummeting in the United States

Both graphs from an extensive discussion of the rise and fall of cigarette smoking in a recent article at The Atlantic.

I started at the peak of the first graph (left margin of the second one) and quit nine years ago.  Smart decision.

  1. I started in 1960, quit for four years from 1980 to 84, then smoked until 2001. I'm very fortunate to have severe asthma and just a small patch of emphysema, as I smoked 2 1/2 packs a day.
