View from a hotel window
Photo emailed to me today by an old high-school classmate. The hotel is the Explora Lodge in Patagonia National Park. The view is from the window in their room. Click image twice to embiggify.
In conversations about eco-catastrophic-consumption, I've literally mentioned vacation flights to Patagonia. 747s burn 3000 gallons per hour, creating about 60,000 pounds of CO2. Do the math on a flight to South America. Nothing in the environmental narrative takes on this behavior in any meaningful way. My boomer, affluent environmentalist peers are living at the limits of what their wealth/income will allow--seemingly feeling no moral constraint on consumer activity due to climate concerns. I blame the academic elite crafters of the "individual lifestyle choice makes no difference" eco-marketing strategy. McKibben, et al. Of course I'm an a-hole for saying any of this and that too is useful information about where we are on a cultural level: EverybodyGetsEverythingTheyWantEnvironmentalism(EGETWE).
I was there in October, not a bad view to be had! I'm sure your old classmate is enjoying it as much I did.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of what another old friend used to say about his home in west Texas "... and there aren't any trees to block the view!"
DeleteHere’s some brilliant music by a singer/composer who was born and raised in Patagonia:

ReplyDeleteRooms at this hotel average $1350/night. It's hardly affordable for the average traveler.
