At the Biltmore House in Asheville, NC, one set of stairs in the house come out from the wall...but do not attached to anything at the other end of each step! It looks for all the world like leverage would ensure that the step would break, etc. If I recall correctly, they were called "cantilevered" steps, with support from a portion of the step beneath it AND the fitting into the wall.
