Can you find the missing seven states in this map?

Take your time pondering this clever map from xkcd.  When you give up, there is a link to the answer at the Kottke via.  (New England is o.k.)  I thought six of them were easy, but the seventh was hard.

  1. Oh, boo hoo, try being New Zealand and see how often you get remembered on world maps.

All my knowledge of the American states comes from the Steve Miller band's song 'Rock'n Me',

  2. New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Delaware. I think! If I got them right, I'm an American History teacher. If I got something wrong...I teach Algebra II.

By the way, one of the most beautiful states, in my opinion, is Kansas, headed west on 70. Lovely like a time machine!

  3. I only got five(the easy ones) but due to vested interests I have to say I was pleased to see the Upper Peninsula of Michigan included (because it's so often skipped) although I was unhappy to see Isle Royale not included when there's a whole bunch of littler Islands scattered around the map
I've seen a different map (I don't believe it was from XKCD) that divided the country into 48 equal population states. Way different.

  5. I’m curious which was the “hard” 7th one. The 7th one I missed should have been easy (It was PA!), but I’m from CA and our view of the US is skewed.

    1. For me the hard one was Delaware. It is a remarkably well-done map.
