Capitalle - new online geography game

I found this game today I think via Metafilter.  The game chooses a random world capital city and invites you to guess it within 6 tries.  After each guess you are informed whether your guess involved the correct continent, the correct hemisphere, whether the city is coastal or inland, how far off your guess is in term of distance, and whether the correct answer is a larger or smaller city.

So, in today's game my first guess was Kinshasa.  I then guessed Lima for a southern capital in another continent (forgetting its coastal location).  The final stage was to use the distances (see map at top of embed).  Sucre was closer, Asuncion even closer, but Buenos Aires further away, directing me to Brasilia.

I had to use a map for assistance.

Sorry for providing a spoiler for today's answer, but you can go to the Capitalle app home page and click the "practice" button for a different random capital city.

My other posts about online geography games (with links): Geoguesser, Where in the U.S.A. is this?, Worldle, and Ghent University's test.  Several of these links are decades old and I haven't checked to see if they've undergone linkrot.

  1. Don't bother. For me, its target country was Brazil, and one of the hints was "inland." Probably AI slop.

  2. I am confused. The capital of Brazil is inland, at least 500 miles from the ocean...

    1. True that. I probably should delegte anonymous' comment, but I'll wait to see if he/she responds to clarify.

BTW, I tried the game again today. And in doing so realized how my cognitive biases deceive me about how far south the northern hemisphere goes.

  3. Off subject, if you like word games

Note the title of the game in blue and the deselect button. The first word(s) selected move to the second word(s). It's best to combine two shorter word(s) first to keep the vertical height small. Word(s) vacated are filled in from the right. Note the horizontal and vertical scroll bars. To give you a hint, Saturn and Earth don't belong together. You'll see what one of them belongs to if you look around and yet I still don't know what the other one belongs to. Also, some groups seem to be separate, but actually belong together. The next time you play it will contain the same word(s).

Yes, that's a web address. Scroll out and look for a dark area where words have not been selected. You can left-click and hold to pan around. Note the colors represent length (minimum is 3 letters). You can't select already selected letters. If you spell a word, it will appear at mid-bottom of the screen. It will tell you how many times it was selected by others. Just click on that box to record it. Keep clicking letters if it's made up of multiple words. You can click back on letters to change the direction or just click on the first letter to deselect the word.

For something different. Match 3 or more. Try to at least match two to keep going, it seems to know if you don't and makes the next pair harder to match.

    1. I've started the first one. Looks to be a long project, so I'll continue later. Hope it saves progress.
