"Things you may not know" about Peter Pan

Over the past 15 years I have blogged items about the flying corset, the eternal "man-child" concept, and about Captain Hook's collegiate background, but I never thought to check any background on J. M. Barrie or the origins of the "Peter Pan" story.  So I offer a tip of my blogging cap to Miss Cellania, who has posted at Neatorama the video embedded above.

Trigger warning: the contents are not cheerful, uplifting, or designed as a pleasant diversion from your usual doomscrolling.  Quite the contrary...

  1. this brings to mind régis loisel’s comic book adaptation, that goes at it not exactly like that, but definitely taking up all the dark strands in the source material. loisel’s peter has a childhood with an alcoholic and abusive mother who ends up informing his stance on motherhood later on, and even ties into a link between peter and jack the ripper in the end. it also has neverland’s amnesiac effects – childlike carelessness in a neverending ‘now’ on one hand, but with a disability to relate to anything or anyone not immediately present as the price to pay for it.

    it’s well worth a look.

  2. Sadly, an awfully High proportion of children's authors seem to have some pretty dark stuff going on in the background.
