Anti-vaxxers are now in charge

Offering a startlingly candid view into the philosophy guiding vaccine recommendations under the Trump administration, the leader of the federal panel that recommends vaccines for Americans said shots against polio and measles — and perhaps all diseases — should be optional, offered only in consultation with a clinician.

Dr. Kirk Milhoan, a pediatric cardiologist who is chair of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, said that he did have “concerns” that some children might die of measles or become paralyzed with polio as a result of a choice not to vaccinate. But, he said, “I also am saddened when people die of alcoholic diseases,”..
In the case of an infectious disease, a personal choice to decline a vaccine may also affect others, including infants who are too young to be vaccinated or people who are immunocompromised. But a person’s right to reject a vaccine supersedes those risks, Dr. Milhoan said.

“If there is no choice, then informed consent is an illusion,” he said. “Without consent it is medical battery.”
I'm a polio survivor with residual impairment.  The attitude of this man in a position of authority is deplorable.

RelevantPolio was that bad

  1. Being a member of a civilization it's not all "get" to be a member you must also give and sometimes that means you have to do things you don't want to do.

The attitude displayed by our current government is the same attitude that a two-year-old may display with a piece of candy.

  2. ‘But a person’s right to reject a vaccine supersedes those risks, Dr. Milhoan said.’

and i guess, by that reasoning, a person’s right to just follow their desire to drive fast in a residential area also supersedes every pedestrian’s right to not get hit.

  4. The hypocrisy of course is that these self-proclaimed pro-life people choose death. And not just their own deaths, which is to a certain extend acceptable, but they choose the death of their children and others.

I've hung around in families that have had to bury their children. This is the wrong way around. Children are supposed to bury their parents. The grief is unimaginable. You do not wish this on your enemies.

And yet, here we are. They are promoting allowing people to spread diseases that kill the children of others. It's individualism gone totally wrong.

I can not believe this is just happening, and that there is not more push back against this from medicine, science and general society at large.

  5. It horrifies me that people are going to have to die, be permanently disabled, and scarred by these diseases THAT WE CAN PREVENT, just because it will make certain members of society feel better about their choices, and more secure in the ignorance.
