A long time ago when I was a merchant sailor, I had a medical issue and I was put ashore in a suburb of Houston in the middle of summer. A cab picked me up at the dock and left me at the marine clinic. I went in and was treated and came back out to return to my ship. No cabs, no buses, no nothin' not even a phone booth to show any means of communication with their world except perhaps an occasional car driving into an underground garage you might hope to communicate with. No people. People in cars looked at me as if I were a visitor from another planet who just didn't know that sidewalks were just decoration in that habitat. I thought they were all some sort of humanoid with a strong reptilian strain. They all lived in shells and went from one cave to another.
