The joy of a leaf pile
Those of you who live in subtropical climes will not be familiar with this. I remember such piles from my childhood, and can still call up memories of the scratchiness of the pointy ends of oak leaves and the unforgettable odor of a burning leaf pile (back in the days when citizens were actually allowed to have fires on their property...)
I live in the country and we burn our yard waste frequently. I grew up on a wheat farm and some years, after harvest, we'd burn the stalks and chaff in the field. Sometimes the fire jumped to another field. Whew boy, that was NOT fun.
rpmason - re the fire jumping to the field, you should check to see if your library has a dvd of the film Days of Heaven. There is one scene in it you would appreciate.
It brings back fond memories. I loved the smell of burning leaves.
