Why some electric outlets are installed "upside down"

  4. The ground should definitely be as close to the ground as possible--not way up in the air! Safety first! One of many reasons not to go anywhere near a hospital.

  5. The reason I love this blog is that I find out about new things serendipitously. We recently moved into a 1960s house and many of our outlets are oriented this way. Thanks for sharing!

  6. The house I grew up in (and still live in) was built by my parents in 1966. Three hole plugs were relatively new then and the conventions of 'up' and 'down' had not really been established at that time. It is clear that two people wired our house and they each positioned the plugs opposite each other. So, half the rooms in the house have the ground hole 'up' and the other rooms have them placed with the ground hole 'down'. It somewhat drives me nuts since I can't just plug something in, I have to look to see which version plug it is!
