I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me why the existence of LGBTQA+ characters is automatically considered pornography by specific humans.
Rational citizens of the USA understand what a person does in their bedroom (as long as no breaks any laws, boundaries, or consent) is none of anyone outside the bedroom's business.
Regarding the specific humans who do conflate the LGBTQA+ community with pedophilia perhaps they should first take a look at the number of religious folk making headlines with their arrests and conviction for sex crimes. #notadragqueen I've several blogs bookmarked who keep track if anyone needs receipts.
Iron Horse, are you saying that children should NOT be taught about oral sex at all? Or that they should be taught by their parents/friends and not by the schools?
Claiming kids were being shown pornography, or that showing kids pornography was ever an issue in Florida schools, or anywhere else, isn't being honest. It's merely an attempt to distract from what Florida's policies are intended to do which is limit or even prevent honest discussions of LGTBTQ+ people and the issues they face as well as racism and the history of slavery, because those discussions make some people uncomfortable.
I think the original post was pointed at the African-American history standards in Florida, but since the discussion has evolved to book banning, I'll add my two cents.
I could not find any book that is actually banned in Florida, nor any evidence that the books below were "shown" to students as part of the regular school curriculum. These books were in the school libraries of some schools and in a few cases in the classroom library of a handful of teachers. The books below were removed from elementary or middle school libraries in various states, or placed in a restricted books section of those libraries. As far as I could determine, all of these books (except maybe 'Flamer') are still available without restriction in Florida high school libraries, most public libraries, book stores, and online. The books below were moved or restricted by school districts in several states, including but not limited to Illinois, Texas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, Wyoming, Wisconsin, and Florida.

Lots of books not related to LBGTQ have also been challenged, but most of those were not on the grounds of real or perceived pornography. For example, To Kill a Mockingbird; Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; The Cay; Of Mice and Men; and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry were removed from the high school curriculum at the start of the 2022-2023 school year in the Burbank (CA) Unified School District.
An honest and reasoned discussion of what books may or may not be age-appropriate for elementary, middle, and high school libraries by informed and engaged citizens is hard when extremists on one side are labelled as "groomers" or pedophiles, and those on the other side are called fascists and Nazis. The same can be said about many current issues in which the extremists get the media coverage.
Florida is a self solving problem, I can't believe people can still get loans to build things in a state that's washing away to hurricanes and ocean rise. Or that anyone would move to a state with such oppressive laws.
Is this about the book thing? Still waiting for someone to explain why it's important to teach kids about oral sex.
