Highly recommended

Via Le Cafe Wittypoots.  DVD requested from our library.  Has any reader seen it?  Care to offer comments?

Addendum Aug 21:  Just watched it tonight.  Absolutely superb acting all around - especially by the young boy (BAFTA-nominated as Best Actor in a Supporting Role for this performance).  Thought-provoking content.  I rated it 4+

Reposted from 2022 to accompany the post on Beau is Afraid.

  1. It is wonderful. Always zagging when you expect it to zig, exceptional performances, uses long shots to capture physical performances. Technically thoughtful filmmaking. Jerks tears without straining or leaning into convention. It's acutely insightful about taking care of each other.

  2. Don't use it as a guide to parenting. It makes the case for precocious children learning to determine their parenting. Kids need parents not facilitators.

  3. It's a fantastic film. The acting is superb and it is VERY well written and directed. As is so often the case, however, the dialogue written for the child is a bit spurious. I very highly recommend it, Stan.

  5. I fear Woody was only nominated for a BAFTA, but he didn't win.

  6. I thought the dad would surely say something like "And then you'll return to heaven," or some such.
