Since 2020, it is possible to pitch a perfect game and be the losing pitcher.
ReplyDeleteThe ghost runner used in extra innings (he starts at 2nd base) since 2020 does not count against the pitcher, so if he comes around to score (maybe steal third, come in to score on a long sac fly), the pitcher could lose the game and be credited with a perfect game.
Harvey Haddix retired 36 straight batters through 12 innings in a game in 1959. He lost the perfect game on the first batter of the 13th inning due to an error. He lost the game, 1-0, giving up one hit. The hit was a home run but the hitter passed a baserunner so it was later ruled as a double. The Pirates had 12 hits in the game but could not get anyone home against Lew Burdette.
Haddix's 36 straight batters retired is a record unlikely to be broken.

Years ago, I worked with Pete Palmer (the sports stats guy). At the time, he did stats for the Red Sox. At lunch, our group would talk about the previous night's game, and Pete would throw in all the cool stats.

And yesterday, Shohei Ohtani (LA Angels) pitched a complete game shutout in the first game of a doubleheader, then hit 2 homers in the second game. Never been done...
