it wasn't until probably my late 20's that i came to the realization that we (i) grew up closer to 'poor' than 'middle class'. i also realized that it wasn't all that bad.
When I was a kid, I always felt like I had more than the other kids. At Christmas, I'd get so many presents! I found out when I was around 20 that back then we'd qualified for food stamps and multiple other services. My parents were buying small toys and wrapping them individually in creative ways so I would always feel like I was getting a lot.
My mom was in school, worked, sold crafts on weekends, couponed like crazy, and managed to make me never feel lacking. Much owed.

It's not the toys or clothes, it's the medical care, education, and retirement security.

In France we say : "A loved child doesn't know he's poor".
