ST. GALLEN, Switzerland — One of the oldest and most valuable collections of handwritten medieval books in the world, housed in the magnificent baroque halls of the library in this town’s abbey, is going online...From my brief review it appears most of the items on line so far are bibles, psalters, breviaries, and such (as would be expected). The top two images would seem to illustrate a piscatorial adventure by monks, though there must be a less prosaic explanation. The bottom image above I found in a "Etymologisches Worterbuch" - a dictionary of etymology! I frankly didn't know those type of reference works had been compiled at such an early date. The collection includes material as varied as curses against book thieves, early love ballads, hearty drinking songs and a hand-drawn ground plan for a medieval monastery, drafted around A.D. 820, the only such document of its kind...
Already, about 200 manuscripts are in the database, and 144 are available online.
