China has been criticized for hypocricy in hosting these games, since handicapped individuals have traditionally been marginalized in Chinese society. However, if the games are broadcast or publicized in the PRC, they may have the beneficial effect of increasing Chinese public awareness of the capabilities of the physically challenged.
