The principal also emailed parents to notify them of the “inaccurate information.”“This is not a misprint,” Morris said. “Someone did not look at what they were handing out to the students.”Families pay a $10 annual instructional fee for the agendas. Morris said the errors led her to question whether artificial intelligence was used to generate the content.“We have to pay a ten-dollar instructional fee every year to get this agenda,” Morris said. “But you’re making us pay for something you used AI for? The Seattle Space Needle has been duplicated in San Francisco, there are two Tijuanas, "Havana" is in the Yucatan Peninsula, and various rivers start and end randomly. This was noticed and may be remedied, but what other crap is being fed through the system? Please listen to this teacher's tangentially-related rant.
I spent my entire life first learning from, then teaching in, this country's educational system, which seems now to be going to hell in a handbasket.

ReplyDeleteLLMs are also combining video game maps of alternate time lines and stories. Scifi fiction basically into educational maps. Spoke to a kid who asked me where new Vegas was. (Fallout). Answered that it's right next to Racoon city (Resident Evil). Then he showed me a map...this is funny and serious.
New Vegas and Raccoon City probably top 5 cities Americans want to live.

ReplyDeleteI taught public school for 32 years, retired 7 years ago. I learned when I was student teaching that you never distribute anything to students without first closely examining it. In a building full of teachers, administrators, aides, librarians and counselors, not a single adult checked these books out prior to distributing them? Shameful. And the shame starts at the administrative level.

IMO, the materials are not the issue. The issue is that multiple supposedly educated adults allowed this crap to be distributed to children and their parents.

This strikes me as another example where a business is not really in the business of making the product that they're pretending to sell. Whomever made this is not a company trying to make a nice educational agenda for school kids, but a business getting a contract and fulfilling it with the least amount of effort.
ReplyDeleteAnd sadly, more and more businesses seem to operate this way. That is to say, they have no actual interest in producing their products, they are just interested in fulfilling orders.
I may not be wording this right, I haven't really figured out exactly what's wrong. But I keep seeing examples of businesses where the focus is not on the sold product anymore, but on other (often financial) shenanigans.
Alternatively, the school ordering these agendas did not do their due diligence and trusted that they were buying what the catalogue said instead of verifying so. However, doing that due diligence is not an easy task if the vendor does not care about the product.
I got a flyer through the door from a Kurdish Barber place down the street from me that had a lot of similar-looking mistakes. The actual text of the flyer was fine but they must have asked AI to generate the image, which included their phone number and address - both of which were mangled.

I read an article today about a $40,000 per year private school called the Alpha School that is expanding throughout the US (apparently close to 50 campuses now). There are no traditional teachers. Students are supervised by "guides" through 2 hours of "personalized", AI-curated content related to core subjects of math, science, literature, etc. The remainder of the day is focused on some arguably beneficial skills (public speaking, interpersonal relationships, etc), but that doesn't offset the negative opinion I have regarding the first part.
