A cure for anthropocentrism

If you have friends who believe that human beings are the center of everything and humans are the reason for the existence of the universe, suggest to them that they view this video timelapse of history, and note that the entire length and breadth of human existence is condensed into the final cel of the presentation...

  1. Argument to scale is no argument at all. Is a child less important than an octogenarian just because they haven't been here as long? Maturing in belief is understanding that, much like how you must first create the universe to make an apple pie, to create mankind you must first create creation. The time it takes to do that is irrelevant, the point is us.

    1. Then why do you think some people matter more than others?

  3. That was not as good as the real thing, by far.

  4. I am becoming more convinced that the phenomenon of earth-like human civilizations in our universe is vanishingly rare. And the chance of interacting with others like us vanishingly unlikely. The gift of our existence is very special. It is in fact so special that it took 13 billion years to create.

  5. This is incredible. Will share.

Yesterday, sitting in Chicagobound traffic, I spotted a Jeep with its rear spare tire covered with a Death Star graphic. While I thought it was cheesy, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I thought a better use of a graphic (for me) would be a massive galaxy and the "YOU ARE HERE" with arrow.

  6. Shoot, I wanted to add that in the movie, "The Life of Chuck," there's a poignant scene in which a character explains to another the Cosmic calendar. It was the first time my religious brother and I connected in a way in which he didn't try to diminish the age of the cosmos.

This is a YouTube of the entire scene. https://youtu.be/4AVMP2FmWsY

    1. Nicely scripted and well acted. Viewing that prompted me to view this analysis of the movie -

14 minutes long and with lots of reveals (I won't call them "spoilers."). The movie is streaming on Apple and Prime for $$, but I've requested the DVD from the library. Looks to be nicely done and presumably deeply moving and thought-provoking. Thanks for the heads-up, Jeremy.

  7. The size scale of the universe relative to a human is similar to the relative scale of a human to a proton, 15 zeros give or take. We are small in one sense and big in the other.
