A bit off topic .. or is it ? ... My first car (this is back in 1970) was a 1937 Vauxhall 14. It had chrome plated steel bumpers, that were attached by steel arms that would partially bend to absorb shock. And then other cars I had, primarily British due to where I lived, had the same chrome plated steel bumpers, but they had rigid steel supports. But all those bumpers did the exact job they were designed for, protecting the bodywork of the car. Ok, we have progressed, now my car has a plastic shell thingie, with lights, that crumples when hit, and costs a heck of a lot to get fixed. I did fit crash bars to one of my Holdens (sort of like a Chevy but Australian) and that certainly protected my car and made others be extra cautious when nearing me, but with the onset of airbags, crash bars needed to have electronic sensors and the price rose too high for me (think tariffs). So, the Italian 2 door car looking so beautiful in my garage does get taken out for drives on the weekend, but if i were to go to a cafe or shopping, anywhere where, ugh, people in cars congregate, I would take the other car, the less precious car ... let that one take the hits.
The Onion story is fun, but some ambiguity in the headline allows for the case to be worse. The ambiguity allows for the Tesla to be the subject of the phrase, while the man was the object. So the Tesla was (auto)parking while a bypasser was hit, making him "bump into" the Tesla. And be sentenced to death. After being run over by a Tesla.
Coming to a country near us, any minute now
