Wow. Looks like a proper reaction-diffusion pattern!
I confess to know nothing about honeycombs -- are elaborate designs like this common? Was it created over some sort of form or guide?
It does appear to be a common pattern; see e.g. here. I'm guessing these shapes arise naturally out of a compromise between 1) creating as much comb surface as possible 2) keeping enough room to walk around.
It looks like a bee city, with streets and apartments. Fantastic as a work of art. The bee all and end all.
