The image tells the story; further details at the Daily Mail (U.K.). I'm glad I live in a community where children are allowed to wander as far as their cellphone coverage allows.
We are regularly scolded by friends and acquaintances for allowing our 8-yr old daughter to bike to the library (6 blocks) and the swimming pool (just under 1 mile)
We live in a town of 6000 people, with average crime levels.
I think the media, most specifically TV news and "entertainment", has instilled a lot of fear in people about the world around them.
