Last Night (1998)

There are several movies entitled "Last Night." This is the Canadian one from 1998 about the end of the world. I had seen it on cable years ago, but recently watched it again on DVD because to me it is an interesting concept movie.

The premise is quite simple - the world will end at midnight. Everyone has known about the coming event for months and has had time to prepare for it. The cause of the catastrophe isn't specified, and isn't important. There are NO special effects. The entire focus of the movie is on what people choose to do on their final day.

There are token moments shown of misbehavior and chaos in the streets, but the emphasis is on people seeking companionship - some through sexual fantasies, some through family dinners, some random and desperate. One is fascinated by the two gas company employees who choose to remain at their job until late on the final day in order to reassure customers that service will be maintained as long as possible.

There are a few possible "movie mistakes" - a car in the opening sequence that is either vandalized or driven away, but shouldn't have been both, and a persistence of daylight until the final hours (odd even for Toronto in the summer I should think), but all-in-all this is an oddly appealing film that forces you to ask yourself how you would spend your final hours were you given the foreknowledge and opportunity to do so.

  1. The persistent sunlight in the movie until midnight, I think, is because it's implied that the world is ending because the sun is going nova, and that maybe it's already swollen. I don't think it's necessarily scientifically sound, but makes sort-of sense...
