A riveting documentary about stuff I didn't learn in school.
Addendum: This book was recommended by a reader -
It is a scholarly, detailed report on all of the political and financial maneuvering that culminated in the mass starvation. Sobering reading.
Ukraine has been "terra incognita" for westerns, especially Americans. It is unfortunate that it is now becoming known due to Chornobyl, the Russian invasions in 2014, and now the war by Russia.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this. We need to know the important relevant history for our situation today.
ReplyDeleteEverything taught in every school is filtered by someone’s decisions based on personal views, time constraints, and outside pressures. Millions of commies starving is not our concern beyond being proof we’re the good guys.
ReplyDelete'...recorded it by ink pen'.
ReplyDeleteWell, that dates me.
Harvest of Sorrow by Robert Conquest covers this well. Terrifying.
ReplyDeleteRequested from our library system (nobody on the waiting list, so should have it in a couple days). Thanks, Anon.

We didn't learn in school - or we are not supposed to know.
ReplyDeleteA fascinating and related story to this one is that of Trofim Lysenko, the scientist who had a large part in the famines that plagued the USSR in the 20’s and 30’s.
