Not a hornet. A moth. A
lunar hornet moth. Endemic to the UK and preyed upon by magpies and great tits, suggesting that the
attempt at Batesian mimicry might be backfiring if the birds have figured it out.

1. that is huge!
ReplyDelete2. wikipedia says: "It has also recently been introduced to America and Canada.".
3. nice to see you back!

I don't think it is a huge as all that. It is on a, presumably, human digit. My thumb, my widest hand digit, is about 3/4's of an inch so maybe the moth is an inch, inch and a quarter, with out the feelers. Not small to be sure but not huge.
Deleteyou are correct, unknown! i was seeing the two moth legs as the divisions between fingers if you show your palm.

Ha! I thought the same thing about there being multiple digits on the hand, and couldn’t figure out why only 3 fingers.
