Make-believe summer lasts for a minute or two as kindergarten children in sunless Lovozero [Russia] bathe in ultraviolet light. Brief exposure to UC radiation provides the children with vitamin D, normally supplied by sunlight. The "sunshine vitamin" strengthens young bones. From the National Geographic book National Geographic Image Collection. Photo credit Joe McNally.
Note from 'sunless Canada'
ReplyDeleteThe best method of getting sufficient vitamin D, for those whoe are are not exposed to the sun in southern latitudes for considerable periods each day, is in pill form. It's inexpensive and very effective. Far more effective than putting toddlers in sunglasses and exposing them each day to sunlamps, though it wouldn't have been such a cool photo for them =-)
