I was disappointed to discover that I had totally misremembered my favorite creature. It really ought to be a Quick-Digesting Geeth. That's what I'm going to continue to use if/when I recite the poem for anyone.
Reposted from 2009 because it has been buried too deeply in the archives.
Wasn't Shel the best?!

ReplyDeleteI learned to play the ukulele during covid isolation and some of my favorite songs to play I was surprised to discover are by Shel. (Be My Friend Tonight, A Boy Named Sue, Everybody's Making It Big But Me, The Mermaid, The Unicorn, Put Another Log on the Fire). https://ozbcoz.com/Songs/index.php?myids=1723526328&cat=3&type=99&instr=soprano
DeleteA candidate for GOAT, but in a tough category with Dr Seuss, Tom Lehrer, etc.

I love the whole concept of synchronicity. Just this morning my music system randomly brought up "Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout"
ReplyDeleteI have been a fan of Shel Silverstein for a long time and I am sure (almost, anyway) that he wrote a series of automotive cartoons with such titles as "Driving off in a Huff" and "Leaving in a Purple Rage" with outlandish vehicles drawn as only he could to match.
ReplyDeleteI think they may have been published in Playboy Magazine, but diligent searching since the day I got on the internet has been fruitless.
I think there may have been some copyright or other legal fluffery that has stolen them from the world.
Sorry to butt in. Any ideas?
Maybe this one?

There's a copy in our local library; I've put in a request for it.
Nope, darn it. Now I am back in the hunt, though. Thanks.
DeleteMy copy was waiting at the library today, and as you said, it wasn't Shel Silverstein. Good luck with your search.
