Updated with upper photo, of a family with a daughter and seven sons. Found at Vintage Photo, where the discussion thread indicates this is a German family photographed at Ellis Island. I agree with the person who expressed sympathy for the daughter - as the eldest child she probably played a major part in raising seven younger brothers.

It's amazing how these families survived w/out having to pimp their children out on tv like the families of today's reality shows! How things change.
