Bullfrog

Encountered yesterday at the Edna Taylor Conservation Area. Interestingly, although bullfrogs have lungs, they perform most of their gas exchange using their oral cavity, which is why the floor of the mouth pumps up and down when you watch them at rest. They are also capable of extremely loud vocalizations; I could hear this one for hundreds of yards before I finally found him.

  1. interesting picture. We just caught a couple really large ones in a local park after dark. Easy to catch with a net when you shine a light in their eyes. You're right on with the vocalizations, when they're stressed (in a snake's grasp or being carried home in a bucket for pictures) they make a sound like a crying baby. Quite disconcerting after dark for a 7 year old (and his dad).
