Guess the artist of this French farm house drawing

A struggling artist in the early 20th century.  After failing to succeed in the fine arts, he went on to fame other fields of endeavor.  Sadly.

Answer at Miss Folly.  Another of his paintings here.

  1. Mr. A Hitler

If only he had been accepted into the Vienna arts academy.

  2. Huh. That really is some decent artwork, at least to my uneducated eye. I'd love to read an alternate history novel in which Hitler became a professional artist and Stalin became a priest. Without Hitler, does WW2 still happen?

  3. Is it just me, or is there something almost obsessive about the detail? All those individual bricks?

  4. @ Mel V.

In 1930s Germany the streets were overrun with armed political gangs. Hitler had actually belonged to a few others before staring the National Socialist party/gang. Most of the gangs advocated for the return of ancient Prussian lands which became part of Poland when the Soviet union pushed westward.

So IMO, if it weren't him it probably would have been someone else.

Perhaps the war would have gone much different, but I think war was inevitable given the state in which Versailles left Germany.

  5. I hope this will teach people to support struggling young artists. Hell hath no fury like an artist scorned.

  6. . . . and if only the Brooklyn Dodgers had signed Fidel Castro to pitch, and Vladimir Ulyanov's brother Alexander Ulyanov hadn't been executed (Vladimir Ulyanov became Lenin), and Mao had stayed in the library! Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  7. The movie "Max" is built around this idea. It's pretty good.

Comparing Castro to Hitler? Classy ahistorical move sir. The last few U.S. presidents are responsible for more innocent deaths than Castro.

  9. Steve,

I don't think anyone was equating the historical magnitudes of Hitler and Castro. Considering Castro anything but a brutal despot, however, is a mistake.
